You’ve got your accommodation, the flights are booked and you’ve arranged your travel insurance. The only thing left to do now is pack. But what should you pack in your carry on for extra long flights when travelling overseas? We’ve got a list of essential items that will have you arriving as fresh as humanly possible after a long flight:

Some Entertainment Items

The first, most obvious item on the list for your carry on should be a number of entertainment items to help you get through the long flight without tearing your hair out. Make sure you pack things that you haven’t read or listened to before. A fresh Vogue magazine or book you’ve purchased the day before is perfect. If you think you’ll be right reading your favourite novel for the 5th time, think again.

Wrap Or Over-Sized Scarf

Long flights usually will mean a little bit of snooze time at least. Rather than letting the flight attendant cover you with dubious looking blanket, why not use your wrap as one? It’s nice to be able to travel with all the comforts and smells of home too.

A Pillow

You don’t need to take your pillow from bed, but a small travel sized pillow you can use to support your neck can mean the difference between being able to sleep away the hours and arriving fresh and getting no sleep and wasting your first day in the hotel catching some much needed Z’s.

Sanitising Wipes

You don’t want to look like a germaphobe but who could blame for you wiping down the arm rest and tray? Keeping sanitizing wipes with you and using them at will could stop you from getting sick before you’ve even reached your destination.

A Toiletries Bag

Aeroplane toilets are notoriously small and hard to move in. But they are big enough to have space to wash your face, brush your teeth and freshen up. You’ll feel all the more relaxed if you arrive at your destination with freshly moisturised skin and brushed teeth.

Noise Cancelling Headphones

If you’re a light sleeper, you’ll want noise cancelling headphones. You won’t believe how much of a difference they make when you’re on the plane.

Drink Lots of Water

Although this is not something you need to pack in your carry on and can ask for on the plane, it’s still important to mention. Without even realising, travelling on a plane for a lengthy amount of time can really leave you dehydrated. Make sure you are constantly sipping water during your trip.

So once you’ve booked your cheap travel insurance and you have everything else under control, take the time out to really pack carefully everything you want to bring in your carry on. If you are going to be flying for many hours to get to your destination, you’ll be grateful that you took the time to pack all of the important items mentioned above.

If you are travelling for a long period of time, you really want to be documenting your experiences. Not only so you can share what you’re doing with your family and friends back home, but also so you can have something to look back on years after you’ve returned home. So once the passport, cheap travel insurance, flights and accommodation are all in order, consider our list of ideas for documenting your travels:

A great digital SLR Camera- One of the most important tools for any traveller really is their camera. If you are going to interesting places there is no doubt that you’ll see things that you’ll want to get a photo of. At the end of the day, your camera phone just won’t cut it. Investing in a quality camera is really one way of ensuring the photos from your trip will be high quality and able to be blown up or printed when you return home.

Set up a blog- Blogs are a great way to keep everyone up to date with what you are doing without having to reply to emails from mum, dad, the rest of the family and a number of friends. Set up your blog well before you leave and send everyone the link who you want to share your travels with. When they want to be able to catch up and see what you’re doing they can just go there.

Keep a journal- Blogs are great, but there is always things that you want to remember but would rather not publicize on the world wide web. This is where bringing along your own journal or diary comes in handy. It’s also a good idea to keep one of these if you are going off the beaten track and won’t have internet access or even power to charge your laptop.

Small scrapbook- Nothing too large because you don’t want it taking up too much room, but a small scrapbook is a great idea so you can stick all of your train tickets, concert tickets and other bits and pieces in there as you go.

Hand-held HD Cam- You can now buy video cameras that can fit in your palm. If you will be going to places where you are thinking about filming, then it’s a good idea to invest a few hundred in one of these. Remember, you may only ever do this trip once, so going all out on making sure you capture everything about your trip can be easily justified.

Your passport, travel insurance and flights are all very important things to organise before going overseas. It’s also important that you provide yourself with the tools to document your journey. If you want to have these memories for many years after you’ve returned home then it’s worth investing in quality equipment and taking the time out every now and then while you are travelling to write about your experiences to be shared with family and friends back home.

When it comes to overseas travel, one of the first things every savvy traveller does is to organise a good travel insurance package. This is just simple common sense and gives you the peace of mind you need to enjoy your holiday without having to worry about meeting unexpected medical or hospitalisation costs.

But even the most experienced traveller can get caught out when it comes to buying those special items to make the trip more comfortable. The travel gadget market seems to be increasing by the day and it is easy to get hooked into the sales pitch of the retailer who is trying to sell you the latest and greatest gadget.

There are plenty of useful objects you can buy to make your trip more enjoyable, like neck cushions to help you relax on a long overseas flight; or a currency converter that helps you stay within your holiday budget. But in this article we are going to take a light-hearted look at some of the crazy objects that some retailers try to ram down the throat of an unsuspecting tourist.

Ever heard about the air-conditioned T-shirt? This unusual item still retails for well over $150 and claims to pump cool air into your shirt via a battery-powered USB drive. This must be the most expensive alternative to a bottle of cool water that ever hit the market.

The StashCard. This ingenious device which you hide your valuables inside the PC card slots in your laptop. Hmmm.. I thought thieves were more likely to steal laptops!

The Urinelle. This is one for the female traveller who has everything. It saves you the trouble of going to the toilet, and all you have to do is pee into this paper cone while standing up. The problem is, you have to carry around with you until you can dispose of it properly. I think it might be easier just to squat behind a tree.

Disposable underwear. Why on earth anyone would want to wear scratchy paper underwear instead of enjoying the comfort of fresh underwear is beyond me. And imagine what would happen if you got a paper cut.

Wearable sleeping bags. Yes, it’s true, some crazy manufacturer actually came up with the idea that you could walk around all day in a sleeping bag so you wouldn’t have to jump into it at night-time. This will be fantastic for those tropical holidays you’ve got planned! Oh, and what about a quick visit to the toilet? Guess not.

The Personalised Airline Seat Cover. The manufacturer of this little gem tries to convince you to pull this cover over your airline seat to protect you from the germs and crumbs left by previous passengers. This will probably work for people who travel in the nude, but for now I think I’ll just trust my jeans thanks very much.

When you read through this list you get an idea of the lunacy that can pervade the retailing industry, but to keep things on even keel just make sure you have your holiday insurance and leave the gadgets out of it.
