Destination Review: 6 Beautiful But Dangerous Vacations

It’s no secret that having an adventure holiday can stir your spirits and provide you with that long sought-after distraction from mundane things in your everyday life. Whilst it is true that one man’s adventure is another man’s boredom, there are places on our planet that are downright dangerous no matter which way you look at it.

When you’re planning your next holiday, and you are looking for adventure, and you have adequate travel insurance in place, you might want to consider the following six beautiful but dangerous destinations.

  • Even before the recent earthquakes, Haiti was an exotic destination simply because of the ‘Badlands’ image that it’s largely lawless society evoked. The country itself is one of the most strikingly beautiful in the Caribbean and with the introduction of United Nations policing its reputation as an exciting destination was considerably enhanced. But to enjoy the country, you have to travel around and that is where the problems start. Regular kidnappings, murders and robberies make this country one of the most dangerous vacation destinations on earth.
  • Brazil immediately brings to mind pictures of beautiful beaches and a nation of endless partying. Although this might be true, it represents only the tip of a mighty iceberg, the balance of which is a hotspot of desperation, lawlessness, drugs and exploitation. The slums of Brazil are a hotpot of drug deals and are dominated by major crime syndicates. If you travel to major towns like Rio or Sao Paolo you should take extra care and make sure you don’t stray into dark locations at night, and always travel in a group.
  • Sri Lanka. Sri Lanka was once a haven for genteel travellers who want to visit exotic destinations off the beaten tourist track. Wonderful beaches and a nation of friendly, kind people brought tourists in their thousands. But then everything changed. This exotic paradise is now home to revolutionary zealots who will do anything to get their way including murder and mayhem. Whilst tourists are rarely the target of these attacks the random nature of their activities places every tourist in moderate danger.
  • Although it is the venue for the 2010 World Cup, South Africa has with two faces. On the one hand fantastic tourist attractions like game parks and exotic landscapes are balanced by dangerous gangs that roam the streets threatening locals and tourists alike at random. It has one of the highest rates of homicide in the modern world, and no amount of security appears to limit the threats to tourists especially those who travel alone in this country.
  • It is said that Colombian women are amongst the most beautiful on earth, and that the mountains and beaches are of unparalleled beauty. But the fact remains that this is a dreadfully violent country and this hidden mask on an otherwise beautiful landscape is the threat facing tourists who venture into this exotic country.
  • The Middle East is still a favourite tourist destination for hundreds of thousands of travellers every year. With the most amazing architecture and religious history on the face of the earth. This region stretching from Israel and encompassing Lebanon, Syria and Jordan, offers so much for tourists wishing to reignite their religion or their love of history. But as the world knows, it is a region steeped in violence with terrorist attacks a regular occurrence despite regular peace attempts.

These six beautiful destinations are both alluring and dangerous at the same time. Your travel plans will need to be carefully made and if you don’t have adequate holiday insurance you should simply forget about it.
